The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has submitted comments in response to a December 2025 Federal Register notice from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regarding proposed changes to travel documentation requirements. The revisions would expand the amount and types of information required of international travelers entering the United States. ANSI’s response addresses how these changes could affect foreign experts’ participation in U.S.-hosted standards committee meetings.
ANSI’s Focus: Critical Need for Standards Expert Access
ANSI’s comments underscore that robust U.S. engagement in international standards-setting is essential to U.S. economic competitiveness, national security, and global influence.
“When [standards development] meetings occur in the United States…lower travel costs enable broader U.S. participation, in-person presence facilitates technical leadership, and networking opportunities strengthen U.S. influence,” the response states. “However, international experts must be able (and encouraged) to travel to the United States.”
