Toy Industry Association Hosts CPSC Commissioner
The Toy Industry Association (TIA), a member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), recently welcomed Consumer Product Safety Commissioner (CPSC) Nancy Nord to its headquarters to discuss the latest initiatives of the toy industry to enhance toy safety.
The September 13 meeting brought together TIA president Carter Keithley, executive vice president for external affairs Ed Desmond, and vice president of standards and government affairs Joan Lawrence with Ms. Nord. Ms. Nord expressed that she considers the alignment of global toy safety standards to be a top priority.

EPA Awards Grants for Students to Design Sustainable Technologies
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded 55 grants to teams of college students to design sustainable technologies that help the environment and economy.
The initial grants are $10,000, as Phase I of a competition amongst teams. In eight months, the teams will reveal their work. A panel of experts will then select several teams to receive more funding to further their designs, implement them in the field, or move them to the marketplace.

ASHRAE Holds Design Competition for Students
The American Society for Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), an ANSI member and audited designator, recently held a Student Design Competition that gives students hands-on experience in practical design work.
This year's Student Design Competition featured a mock design of the Ginsburg Tower at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida. Three teams were awarded prizes for their work in the categories of HVAC System Design, HVAC System Selection, and Sustainable Building Design. Winning designs will be presented by the students at the 2011 ASHRAE Winter Conference.

Upcoming ATIS Webinar to Detail Policy Management Standards
The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), an ANSI member, has announced an upcoming webinar that will discuss policy management on September 30, 2010.
The ATIS Policy Management Focus Group has identified tools for unifying divergent policy management standards and enabling policy's extension into new areas such as home networking. These findings will be shared with webinar attendees.

IEST Provides Resources through Young Professionals Network
The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST), an ANSI member, offers a slew of resources for new members of the field through its Young Professionals Network.
The network includes job postings, career advice, videos on relevant topics, information on training courses, and more. It also includes links to LinkedIn and Facebook pages where young professionals can network with one another.
