UL Provides Halloween Safety Tips
Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a member and audited designator of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has developed a list of Halloween safety tips for the home and family this October.

Tips include guidance on safe home decorating, such as inspecting lights and electric decorations for frayed wires or other signs of damage, keeping lit candles away from other decorations and out of children's reach, and lighting walkways outside the house for trick-or-treaters. Additional tips are provided for spooky but safe costumes, including using costumes made of flame-retardant materials, avoiding masks that obstruct vision, and wearing bright fabrics for trick-or-treating.

APSP Receives Contract from Consumer Product Safety Commission
The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has won a contract by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to provide training services on compliance with and adherence to Section 1404 of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety (P&SS) Act.

Through the contract, APSP will develop training programs that support compliance with the P&SS Act through training of pool and spa professionals, including aquatics managers and lifeguards, that will bring and keep pools and spas in compliance with the act.

ASME Launches Quarterly Newsletter
ASME, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has launched a new quarterly newsletter to inform stakeholders of new initiatives and activities of the organization.

Content in the "Standards & Certification Update" newsletter will address new and existing standards publications, conformity assessment activities, research and development, and training and professional development opportunities.

Career Opportunities for Radiation Protection Technologists on the Rise, Says ANS
The American Nuclear Society (ANS), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has informed its stakeholders that career opportunites are expanding for radiation protection technologists, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

New jobs in this field will be found in hospitals, physicians' offices, and diagnostic imaging centers. In this setting, radiologic technologists and technicians take x rays and administer diagnostic procedures, as well as operating CT and MRI machinery. Additional job opportunities will come from the Department of Energy and the nuclear power industry.

David Finn of Symantec Speaks to HIMSS on Health IT Trends and Meaningful Use
HIMSS, an ANSI organizational member, has posted freely available videos of a recent interview with David Finn, CISA, CISM, health information technology officer for Symantec. Mr. Finn discusses health information technology (IT) trends and meaningful use.

Topics addressed in these videos include keys to successful electronic health records (EHR) implementation, meaningful use, health IT workforce shortages, and how to get experience in the health IT industry.

ASTM Applies for TAG Accreditation on Asset Management
ASTM International, an ANSI member and audited designator, has submitted an application for accreditation for a proposed U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/Project Committee 251, Asset Management, and a request for approval as TAG Administrator. The proposed TAG intends to operate using the Model Operating Procedures for U.S. Technical Advisory Groups to ANSI for ISO Activities as contained in Annex A of the ANSI International Procedures.
