A Cambridge-trained physicist, Mr. Marriott served as director of the British Standards Institution (BSI) and later as secretary general of CENELEC until 1997, when he made the decision to return to the United Kingdom to work in the Anglican Church. Mr. Marriott served as diocesan secretary of the Church of England, Diocese of Chester, until 2006.
"We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our friend and colleague," said Gary Kushnier, vice president of international policy at the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). "Stephen was at the forefront of several initiatives to bring the U.S. and European standards communities together, from the very first ANSI-European meetings in 1989. Many ANSI members enjoyed working with Stephen during these formative years of ANSI-European standards collaboration. We will remember him fondly."
The Diocese of Chester will hold a memorial service for Canon Stephen Marriott at Chester Cathedral in Chester, England, on Saturday, April 16, 2011.
