ANSI Legal Issues Forum to Explore Patented Technology in Standards

As part of the World Standards Week 2011 series of events, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will present its annual Legal Issues Forum on October 13, 2011. Traditionally one of the week's most popular events, this year's forum will focus the attention of the standards community on the legal and policy issues that may arise when patented technologies are included in voluntary consensus standards.

Panel 1: The Pros and Cons of RAND: Does RAND Continue to Be the Preferred Approach to Essential Technology?
Moderated by Earl Nied, Intel Corporation's program director of intellectual property rights and incoming chairman of the ANSI Intellectual Property Rights Policy Committee (IPRPC), the first panel of the day will address the pros and cons of the RAND (reasonable and non-discriminatory) licensing commitment and its continued viability as the preferred approach to deal with essential patented technology in standards.

Panel 2: Is Ex-Ante Disclosure and/or Negotiation of Licensing Terms a Safe Alternative to RAND?
Led by moderator Dan Bart, president and CEO of Valley View Corporation and current chairman of the ANSI IPRPC, the second panel will address the pros and cons of mandatory or voluntary ex ante disclosure of licensing terms as a potential alternative to the RAND licensing model.

The ANSI Legal Issues Forum will be held on October 13, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Newseum's Knight Conference Center in Washington, DC.

The forum is open to ANSI members and interested stakeholders, including those from government, industry, business, consumer groups, and academia. The fee is $275 for ANSI members and $350 for non-members. Business attire is recommended.
