White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard A. Schmidt Invited to Address Press Conference on Safeguarding Protected Health Information
The White House unveiled a "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights" Thursday as the core component of a comprehensive report to enhance consumer privacy protections in the information age. The report,
Consumer Data Privacy in a Networked World: a Framework for Protecting Privacy and Promoting Innovation in the Global Digital Economy, is intended to give consumers greater control over how their personal information is used online, and set expectations for companies that use personal data. "Privacy protections are critical to maintaining consumer trust in networked technologies," the White House report states. "When con¬sumers provide information about themselves—whether it is in the context of an online social network that is open to public view or a transaction involving sensitive personal data—they reasonably expect companies to use this information in ways that are consistent with the surrounding context." According to the report, "the expanded use of health IT, including patients' access to health data through electronic health records, is a key element of the Administration's innovation strategy." Comprehensive privacy and security safeguards, the report states, are fundamental to this strategy. On March 5, White House cybersecurity coordinator
Howard A. Schmidt is invited to address a press conference unveiling
