U.S. Food Industry Experts Invited to Participate in ISO TC 34 Activities

6/26/2012

ANSI Strongly Encourages U.S. Stakeholder Engagement to Strengthen Economic Position

U.S. participation and leadership in international standardization is critical to maintaining and increasing the nation's position as a global economic leader. By influencing the standards that shape international trade regulations, product acceptance, and industry development, U.S. participants in international standards body activities gain competitive advantage in the global market for their organizations and for U.S. industry as a whole.

As the official U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) works to increase U.S. awareness of international standardization issues and facilitates the involvement of all interested stakeholders from the private and public sectors. Through active participation in U.S. Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) to ISO Technical Committees (TCs), U.S. experts and subject-matter leaders have the opportunity to shape the future of their industry and its global market. U.S. TAGs develop and communicate U.S. positions on ISO ballots and activities, including the approval, reaffirmation, revision, and withdrawal of ISO standards.

The American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS), the ANSI-accredited administrator of the U.S. TAG to ISO TC 34, Food products, is currently seeking participants for U.S. TAGs to the following ISO TCs and Subcommittess (SCs) that work on a variety of food-related standards:

  • ISO TC 34, Food products
  • ISO TC 34, SC 17, Management systems for food safety
  • ISO TC 34, SC 2, Oleaginous seeds and fruits and oilseed meals
  • ISO TC 34, SC 11, Animal and vegetable fats and oils
  • ISO TC 34, SC 16, Horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis

For further details on the benefits of participation, TAG functions and responsibilities, and other information about U.S. TAGs to TC 34, view AOCS's ISO TC34 Food Products Manual. Additional questions can be directed to [email protected].

Those interested in participating are asked to complete AOCS's Online 2012 ISO Participation Form by July 31, 2012.

For more information about all U.S. ISO activities or to express interest in establishing or participating in another U.S. TAG, contact Karen Hughes, ANSI program manager, ISO P membership (212.642.4992; [email protected]). A list of all current ANSI-accredited U.S. TAGs to ISO is available here.
