A Joint Working Group (JWG) of the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is currently involved in revision work on
ISO/IEC Guide 51,
Safety aspects - Guidelines for their inclusion in standards. As the U.S. representative to ISO, the IEC via the U.S. National Committee (USNC), and the ISO Committee on Consumer Policy (COPOLCO) via the Consumer Interest Forum (CIF), the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is now seeking participation from U.S. experts to serve on a U.S. Virtual Technical Advisory Group (VTAG) to the JWG for the revision of ISO/IEC Guide 51.

Guide 51 provides standards writers with guidelines for the inclusion of safety aspects when developing and discussing standards. It is applicable to any safety aspect related to people, property, or the environment, or a combination of one or more of these. Aimed at reducing the risk arising from the use of products, processes, or services, the guide takes the complete lifecycle into consideration, including both the intended use and any reasonably foreseeable misuse. | |
The U.S. VTAG will serve as a sounding board for U.S. experts and help provide insight on matters being dealt with at the international level as ISO/IEC Guide 51 is updated. ANSI operates VTAGs via teleconference and webinar, so no travel is required. All interested U.S. stakeholders are strongly encouraged to participate.
Individuals interested in participating in the U.S. VTAG should contact Karen Hughes ([email protected]) by close of business on Friday, August 17, 2012. ANSI is also soliciting comments on the second Committee Draft (CD) consultation on the revision of ISO/IEC Guide 51, currently underway. After an initial CD consultation closed in February 2012, the JWG examined responses and decided to proceed with a second CD consultation. All interested stakeholders are invited to contribute comments on the CD for consideration as part of a consolidated U.S. position.
