Paper Competition Announced for U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day 2013

4/04/2013

Papers addressing ""Standards for a World at Work and Play"" are due by August 3

The 2013 World Standards Day Paper Competition has been announced by the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee and the paper competition's sponsor, SES - The Society for Standards Professionals.

The theme for this year's paper competition, "Standards for a World at Work and Play," reflects the many ways that standards function as tool to bolster consistency, repeatability, dependability, and excellence in a wide variety of technologies and fields. Standards are the foundation upon which developing nations build their economies and compete in the global marketplace, facilitate technological innovations, and foster evolving social and environmental compliance practices that assure the safety of workers and the health of the world and its citizens.

This year's U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day will focus on how standards bring confidence to businesses, governments, and consumers, impacting reliability from farm to table, manufacturer to retailer, and workplace to home.

Paper competition winners will be announced and given their awards during the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day banquet on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at The Fairmont Hotel in Washington, DC. Cash prizes will be awarded for up to three papers selected by a panel of judges. The first place winner will receive a plaque and $2,500. Second and third place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively, along with a certificate. In addition, the winning papers are expected to be published in the SES journal, Standards Engineering.

All submissions must be previously unpublished, between 2,500 and 4,500 words long, and formatted in 10-point, Times New Roman font. All submissions must include a completed entry form, available here, and must be sent to [email protected] no later than midnight on Saturday, August 3, 2013, to be eligible.

The contest's complete list of rules can be accessed here.
