Call for Nominations for Greenhouse Gas Accreditation Committee

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites qualified candidates to apply for membership in ANSI's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Accreditation Committee (GVAC). Applications and nominations must be received by September 30, 2013, and are for 3-year terms beginning January 1, 2014.

The Nominations Committee of the GVAC seeks experts in the fields of greenhouse gas measurement and verification, accreditation, and policy development. Specific duties of committee membership include advising policies and procedures for the ANSI GHG Accreditation Program, making accreditation decisions regarding the status of validation and verification bodies that have applied for initial accreditation or are undergoing their annual surveillance process, and providing input and advice to ANSI staff.

Although all individuals with expertise in GHG validation and/or verification, accreditation, management systems, and/or policy development are encouraged to apply, preference will be given this year to individuals with a background in the following areas:

• Industrial and/or corporate reporting of GHG emissions
• GHG project accounting principles
• GHG project methodologies

ANSI's GHG Validation/Verification Body Accreditation Program verifies an organization's compliance with requirements outlined in the International Standard ISO 14065, Greenhouse gases - Requirements for greenhouse gas validation and verification bodies for use in accreditation and other forms of recognition. In conducting its accreditation activities, ANSI itself follows the International Standard ISO/IEC 17011, Conformity assessment - General requirements for accreditation bodies accrediting conformity assessment bodies.

The specific responsibilities of a GVAC member include:

• Attending at least two one-day meetings a year,
• Serving as volunteers on task groups/sub-committees as appointed by this Committee,
• Serving as volunteers on Evaluation Task Groups (ETGs) to evaluate the accreditation process and to recommend actions to the GVAC,
• Serving as volunteers on appeals and complaint panels as appointed by the GVAC Chair,
• Providing timely feedback and responses to ANSI ballots, and
• Participating in ongoing training organized by ANSI.

Members of the GVAC shall be elected for a term of three years and are eligible for re-election for up to two additional terms. The total time commitment per year is estimated to be approximately 10 days. This includes participation at scheduled meetings where in-person participation is encouraged but attendance via teleconference is acceptable. The operating procedures of the GVAC can be found here.

Since the inception of the program in 2008, ANSI has accredited 25 GHG validation/verification bodies. The ANSI GHG Accreditation program is recognized by both voluntary and mandatory GHG programs including organizations such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Climate Action Reserve (CAR), American Carbon Registry (ACR), The Climate Registry (TCR), and mandatory reporting regulations through regional initiatives such as the Western Climate Initiative (WCI), and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
