American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member and accredited standards developer the International Code Council (ICC) recently named Dominic Sims as its new CEO. Prior to the announcement, Mr. Sims had been serving as the organization's interim CEO and chief operating officer (COO).
Mr. Sims worked as the CEO for the Southern Building Code Congress International Inc. (SBCCI), a member organization focused on the development of model codes and standards related to the building industry that merged with ICC in 2003. Before joining SBCCI, he was the executive vice president for Florida's Palm Beach County Planning, Zoning & Building (PZ&B) Department. Mr. Sims received his bachelor of science degree in organizational management - business from Palm Beach Atlantic University.
The ICC, a membership association dedicated to building safety, fire prevention, and energy efficiency, develops codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. The International Codes serve as the basis for construction of federal properties around the world, and as a reference for many nations outside the United States.
ANSI member and audited designator the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently hired Karen Berard-Reed as the senior project manager for the association's public education division. She will be responsible for high-risk outreach public education efforts carried out by NFPA, which include special programs targeted toward the young, elderly, and individuals in impoverished areas.
Prior to joining NFPA, Ms. Berard-Reed worked at Rhode Island College as an assistant professor of health education and as a health education program coordinator. She also served as a spokesperson for the Center to Prevent Youth Violence, a role she will continue to carry out while working at NFPA. She received her bachelor's of science degree in health education and her master's degree in education from Rhode Island College and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in education in a joint Rhode Island College-University of Rhode Island program.
