Inaugural SAE Combo Fast Charging Station Installed in Southern California
The first-ever public electric vehicle (EV) charging station to comply with a standard for EV fast charging stations developed by ANSI member and accredited standards developer SAE International recently opened in San Diego. The standard, SAE J1772, SAE Electric Vehicle and Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge Coupler, provides performance requirements for physical, electrical, functional, and performance aspects of fast charging stations for EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The unveiling of the charging station occurred in conjunction with the 2013 Plug-In Conference, which was held in San Diego on September 30 - October 3, 2013.

The new charging station is capable of charging an empty EV battery to 80 percent full in less than half an hour and is compatible with vehicles using the Combined Charging System (CCS), a system based on SAE J1772 that allows for both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) charging using a single plug. Chevrolet and BMW currently offer cars with SAE J1772-compliant fast-charge connectors and Ford, General Motors, and Volkswagen, among others, are expected to release vehicles in the U.S. and Europe featuring SAE J1772-compliant charging systems.
