Voluntary consensus standards play an important role in bolstering consumer confidence in products and services, and standardization efforts in this area are becoming more significant as commerce and economic activity grow increasingly international in scope. The workshop will look at models and tools currently used by suppliers to communicate product and service information in an effective, accurate manner, as well as how consumers use information of this sort to make informed purchasing decisions.

COPOLCO provides ISO member nations with a forum for the discussion and promotion of standardization in connection with consumer interests. The committee works to promote work that helps consumers benefit from standards and seeks ways to encourage consumer participation in standardization work on the domestic and international level, among other activities. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the U.S. member of ISO, maintains a Consumer Interest Forum (CIF) that works to promote consumer involvement in standardization and active engagement in COPOLCO. Those interested in getting involved in the CIF should contact Karen Hughes, ANSI Director, ISO P-membership services and CIF secretary, at [email protected].
