ISO/IEC JTC 1 Forms Two Working Groups on Big Data and Internet of Things

1/27/2015

ANSI Calls for U.S. Expert Participants

The International Organization for Standardization / International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1, Information Technology, announced the creation of two Working Groups (WGs) focused on standardization in connection with big data and the Internet of Things (IoT). The new groups were created at the ISO/IEC JTC 29th plenary meeting, held November 15-20 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). As the official U.S. member to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) calls for U.S. expert stakeholders to get involved in these new areas of activity.

Since 1987, JTC 1 has addressed the rapidly changing standardization requirements of the global information and communications technology (ICT) industry, speeding the developmental process and the wide deployment of relevant standards. Highlighting a long history of U.S. leadership, ANSI holds the secretariat to JTC 1 and Karen Higginbottom, director of standards initiatives at Hewlett-Packard, serves as Chair. The ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Administrator to JTC 1 is the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer (ASD).

To ensure U.S. positions are represented in the work of the two new WGs, INCITS is forming a U.S. TAG for each and seeks U.S. experts to participate.

Under U.S. leadership, WG 9 on Big Data will serve as the focus of JTC 1's big data standardization program and will identify standardization gaps. It will develop foundational standards - including reference architecture and vocabulary - that will guide the way for other big data efforts both within WG 9 and throughout JTC 1. The U.S.'s Wo Chang, digital data advisor for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Information Technology Laboratory (ITL), will serve as Convenor of WG 9.

WG 10 on IoT will focus on foundational IoT standards upon which other JTC 1 standards can be developed. IoT refers to the use of data capture and communications technology to inform an international network connecting physical objects with their digital equivalents. WG 10 will continue the work begun in the JTC 1 Special Working Group (SWG) on IoT, focusing on standardization gaps in areas such as vocabulary, terms, and definitions, and monitoring IoT regulatory, market, and technology requirements [see related article]. SangKeun Yoo of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology will serve as WG 10 Convenor.

All interested U.S. stakeholders with expertise in big data or IoT are strongly encouraged to get involved in the U.S. TAG to WG 9 or WG 10. For more information, contact Jennifer Garner, director, INCITS standards programs, at [email protected].
