The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) has announced the appointment of William M. Smith, FASPE, as their new executive director and CEO. In this role, Mr. Smith will oversee the administration, management, and financial operations of ASPE, and implement the policies and procedures established by the Society's Board of Directors.
A member of the society since 1993, Mr. Smith began working for ASPE last year as senior director of technical and regulatory affairs. In this role, he served as the liaison between the organization and the plumbing industry's code writing and standards developing organizations (SDOs). Prior to this position, he served on the ASPE Board of Directors as society affiliate liaison, and later vice president, affiliate. In 2012 he was elected to the ASPE College of Fellows and received the Society's Distinguished Service Award for his contributions.
Mr. Smith is active in the codes and standards community, participating in standards developing activities with many professional organizations and SDOs. He will continue to represent the interests of ASPE and the plumbing engineering community in codes and standards activities in his new role.
ASPE is a professional organization that protects the health and safety of the public through the dissemination of technical data and information for plumbing engineers, designers, contractors, code officials, and manufacturers. ASPE is a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Ms. Weiker has worked with the standards community for many years, first becoming a member of NCPDP in 1993 and contributing greatly to the development of NCPDP standards. She is a recognized subject matter expert on a number of topics, including HIPAA, ASCX12, Operating Rules, and ACA administrative simplification provisions. She also frequently serves as an industry witness on issues including HIPAA standards, quality measures, regulatory reform, and Health Information Technology, testifying to the National Committee on Vital Health Statistics (NCVHS).
Ms. Weiker previously worked as the director of business exchange services for Hewlett-Packard. She serves as co-chair of NCPDP's Standardization Committee, and has received several honors from NCPDP including The Individual Member Excellence (TIME) award and the Benjamin D. Ward Distinguished Member Award.
NCPDP is a not-for-profit forum dedicated to promoting industry standards and business solutions for improved patient safety and health outcomes with decreased costs. The organization creates standards for the real-time electronic exchange of healthcare information. NCPDP is an ANSI member and accredited standards developer.
