In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:
Flushing Devices
There are more than 19 million miles of pipes and cables buried beneath the surface of the earth transporting oil and gas, water and sewer, and electrical and telecommunications services to homes, schools, and businesses. The successful design and operation of this buried infrastructure depends upon it being identified and taken into account whenever digging takes place. When buried infrastructure is damaged it can cause costly repairs as well as disruptions in service, and compromises human health and safety.
CSA Group recently released a new ANS to promote effective damage prevention practices of buried infrastructure. CSA Z247-2015, Damage prevention for the protection of underground infrastructure, applies to ground disturbance in proximity to existing, deactivated, abandoned in-place, or reserved-for-future-use underground infrastructure. CSAZ247-2015 identifies the damage prevention process and outlines key elements that can prevent and reduce damage to all underground infrastructure and enhance public safety.
