June 23 ANSI Cities Network Webinar Focuses on NIST Community Resilience Program

6/06/2016

On June 23, from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm ET, the monthly webinar of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Network on Smart and Sustainable Cities (ANSSC) will feature a report on the community resilience activities of the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The featured speaker will be Stephen Cauffman, a research engineer with the NIST Community Resilience Program.

The NIST Community Resilience Program is developing science-based tools to measure resilience at the community scale and guidance on planning and implementing measures to improve resilience. The program has produced the Community Resilience Planning Guide for Buildings and Infrastructure Systems and the Community Resilience Economic Decision Support Guide for Buildings and Infrastructure Systems. It also has established the Community Resilience Panel, composed of a broad group of stakeholders to identify and address gaps in knowledge, guidance, and standards to enhance community resilience. The program is supported by the NIST-funded Center for Risk-Based Community Resilience Planning, a 10-institution team led by Colorado State University.

Stephen Cauffman previously served as the program manager for the World Trade Center Investigation, led NIST's study of the performance of structures following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and was a member of the team that studied the collapse of the Dallas Cowboys practice facility. He has served as leader of NIST's Structures Group and as deputy chief and acting chief of the Materials and Structural Systems Division.

The ANSSC is a forum for information sharing on standardization developments for smart and sustainable cities in the U.S. and abroad. Participation in the network's monthly webinars and valuable information sharing between webinars is a benefit of membership for ANSI full members. Others are invited to join the network and pay a nominal fee. Sponsorship opportunities are also available which include network participation, recognition at the start of monthly webinars, and other benefits.
