People on the Move

People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards and conformance community.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member and accredited standards developer, has hired Randy Cooper as its new vice president of technical operations and standards. Mr. Cooper, who will join AHAM in July, is a veteran appliance industry leader who has nearly three decades of experience in the industry.

During his previous position at Whirlpool Corporation, Mr. Cooper served as design for product safety and regulatory director. His positions at Whirlpool and Maytag included leadership roles in product design, research and development and global product approval.

Mr. Cooper has been a mainstay in AHAM activities for almost 20 years as a thought leader in AHAM's strategic safety initiative, and as a driving force behind many of AHAM's efforts on safety, performance, and energy efficient standards. He achieved AHAM's Home Appliance Industry Leadership Award in April.

"AHAM members who have worked with Randy agree that he has the experience to take AHAM's technical expertise to a new level," said AHAM President and CEO Joseph M. McGuire. "The knowledge he has acquired over his 27 years in engineering positions with Whirlpool and Maytag, as well as in volunteer positions for AHAM, will serve the industry very well."

Mr. Cooper will replace Wayne Morris, who is retiring in November after 22 years with AHAM.

The National Institute of Building Sciences, (NIBS), ANSI member, has hired civil engineer JiQiu (JQ) Yuan, Ph.D., PE, as its project manager. Dr. Yuan will be supporting activities of the Building Seismic Safety Council and Multihazard Mitigation Council. Dr. Yuan is also an adjunct professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where he teaches classes covering reinforced concrete design and prestressed concrete design.

Dr. Yuan is an active participant in several professional engineering groups: He is the member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI), a voting member of the ACE Committee 228-0B, Visual Inspection, and an associate member of ACI Committee 239, Ultra-High Performance Concrete and ACI Committee 408, Bond and Development of Steel Reinforcement.

Previously, Dr. Yuan was a research engineer for Professional Service Industries, Inc. at the Federal Highway Administration Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, Va., and an adjunct professor at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Kansas-Lawrence, a master's degree in material science and engineering from the China Building Materials Academy in Beijing, China, and a bachelor's degree in material science and engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai, China.
