USNC Current Newsletter Focuses on Unsung Heroes Working to Support Critical Electrotechnologies Worldwide

The U.S. National Committee (USNC) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has published the summer 2016 edition of its quarterly newsletter, the USNC Current. The issue highlights some of the IEC's lesser-known Technical Committees (TCs), groups, and partnerships, focusing on U.S. leadership in several TCs that that often fly under the radar while working to support critical electrotechnology advancements at a global level.

The issue explores the work of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to IEC TC 10 on insulating fluids and IEC TC 78, Live working, which prepares technical publications related to the utilization of tools, equipment, and devices on and in the vicinity of live parts of electrical installations and systems.The Current also highlights standardization work by IEC TC 21, Secondary cells and batteries, which is central to future advances in all energy storage domains.

Another highlight includes the launch the USNC's own Young and Emerging Professionals Program, an effort designed to help foster the engagement of young and emerging professionals in IEC standardization work. The issue also reveals the names of the U.S. winners of the IEC Young and Emerging Professionals Workshop Competition [see this year's winners], who will attend events held in conjunction with the 80th IEC General Meeting this October in Frankfurt, Germany.

A committee of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the USNC serves as the focal point for U.S. parties who are interested in the development, promulgation, and use of globally-relevant standards for the electrotechnical industry. The Committee is also engaged in the assessment of conformance to standards, undertaking work in areas such as testing, certification, and accreditation.

As the U.S. representative to the IEC and many related regional standardization bodies, the USNC is a conduit to the global standards-setting community for technical and policy positions arising in the U.S. and brings issues from the global arena to the U.S. for review, consideration, and response. Strong U.S. participation in the IEC is critical to national competitiveness and the continued growth and innovation in U.S. electrotechnical industries.

The Current is the USNC's popular electronic newsletter, distributed to the USNC membership but freely available to all interested stakeholders. USNC members and other experts in electrotechnology and standardization contribute original content of keen interest to the U.S. standardization community.
