Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Emergency Medical Services to Packaging and Processing Machinery

1/30/2017

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Emergency Medical Services and Systems

EMS.gov defines emergency medical services, also known as EMS, as systems that provide emergency medical care. Patients and care providers alike rely upon EMS to help provide quick response and detailed assessment of injuries and illnesses, and to integrate with other services and systems that serve to maintain and enhance the community's health and safety. EMS systems have many components, including agencies and organizations, trauma systems, communications, administrators and government officials, among others.

Packaging and Processing Machinery

The risk assessment process in regards to packaging and processing machinery involves requirements for design, construction, reconstruction, modification, installation, set-up, operation, and maintenance of processing and packaging machinery systems all to ensure safety of personnel working with these systems.

The American National Standard (ANS) ANSI/PMMI B155.1-2016, Safety Requirements for Packaging and Processing Machinery, establishes safety requirements for machinery. The standard applies to new, modified, or rebuilt industrial and commercial machinery that perform packaging functions for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging. Also included are the conveying machinery used within the packaging functions; coordination of the packaging functions that take place in sequence on the production line; and packaging-related converting machinery. This ANS does not apply to packaging machinery used by retail consumers.

PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, is an ANSI-accredited standards developer that represents the voice of more than 750 North American manufacturers and suppliers of equipment, components, and materials as well as providers of related equipment and services to the processing and packaging industry.
