During the latter part of the visit, ANSI and SAC hosted an"Executive Roundtable on U.S.-China Strategic Cooperation," where industry representatives shared perspectives on areas of mutual priority and to enhance U.S. - China strategic cooperation in standardization. From the Chinese side, the event featured presentations from Wu Xiaobo, vice president, China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS); Gao Linpeng, director of standardization, China Institute of Standardization (CIE); Dr. Li Yubing, director general of international cooperation, SAC; and Wei Hong, deputy director general, general affairs management department-SAC. U.S. speakers included Dr. Edward G. Tiedemann, Jr., senior vice president, engineering fellow, head of standards and industry organizations, Qualcomm; Philip Piqueira, vice president, global standards, Underwriters Laboratories(UL); and John Miller, vice president for global policy and law, cybersecurity, and privacy, Information Technology Industry Council (ITI).
A total of 44 participants attended the roundtable event including the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), GE, Caterpillar, and ASME, among others.
During the roundtable, Wu Xiaobo and Gao Linpeng gave detailed presentations on China's association standards, including progress made to date and next steps for the new work plan. Dr. Li Yubing provided a presentation on self-balancing vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles and proposed a working group to strengthen cooperation and mutual recognition.
Finally, Wei Hong provided a detailed presentation on the participation of foreign-funded enterprises in China's standardization work, which highlighted opportunities for U.S. engagement in Chinese standard development activities.
From the U.S. perspective, Dr. Edward G. Tiedemann Jr. presented on cellular standardization and vehicle to everything (V2X) communication in China. He identified possible areas of cooperation and harmonization in 3GPP-defined radio access and existing application protocols, i.e., harmonization of transport and network protocols. Phil Piqueira gave a presentation that highlighted a case study on UL's partnership with China on hoverboard standards. Finally, John Miller gave a presentation on ITI's engagement and collaboration with China on information technology, cybersecurity, and information security topics. At the conclusion of his presentation, he called upon both parties to flag opportunities to participate in globally focused consortia, while also highlighting work currently being conducted in a variety of fora.
