Did You Know?

Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation of members and partners, highlighting recent accomplishments and new resources related to standardization.

IEEE Releases Updated Version of Publication on Ethically Aligned Design
IEEE, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has released the second version of its publication on the ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems.

Ethically Aligned Design: A Vision for Prioritizing Human Well-being with Autonomous and Intelligent Systems was developed with contributions from committees of the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics and Autonomous Intelligent Systems. Over 250 contributors including global thought leaders and experts in autonomous and intelligent systems, ethics, and related issues participate in these committees, leading to a comprehensive and crowd-sourced global treatise on the topic. This second version of the document includes input from five new committees, in addition to the eight committees that contributed to the first version.

"IEEE, through The Global Initiative, the evolving Ethically Aligned Design document, and other associated activities, is following through on a commitment to engage global communities in creating practical guidelines that will help ensure the development of ethically aligned autonomous and intelligent products, services, and systems," said Konstantinos Karachalios, managing director for IEEE Standards Association. "Towards that end, it is imperative that we create consensus about how these technology platforms may explicitly support and prioritize human values and well-being. In doing so, we will overcome current sensationalism and fears associated therewith and we will be able to maximize the potential benefits autonomous and intelligent systems can bring for humanity."

ICC Publishes Online Toolkit: Value of the Code Official
The International Code Council (ICC), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has developed a new resource that helps government officials and industry stakeholders impart the key role that code officials have in the community.

The Value of the Code Official toolkit includes talking points, presentation slides, a flyer for electronic and print distribution, and a video on code officials. These resources can be used to encourage students and young professionals to join this line of work, and to build awareness of the role of code officials. Individuals can use materials from the toolkit as a guide when speaking to many different groups, as the kit includes multiple options on how to communicate with different intended audiences.

NIBS Conference to Offer CEUs for Building Community Professionals
The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), an ANSI member, will hold its annual conference this year on January 8-11 in Washington, DC. Building Innovation 2018 will bring together professionals in the building community in an environment that supports collaboration and creation of solutions to benefit the built environment, specifically related to this year's theme of "Sustain. Strengthen. Secure."

Session topics include managing data across facility life cycle; advanced technology and the future of buildings, cities, and infrastructure; liability and risks in the pursuit of high-performance buildings; and 3D-printing in the build environment, among many others.

The conference will offer its attendees 31 Learning Units (LUs) from the American Institute of Architects, as well as 31 contact hours from the International Code Council (ICC), for a total of 3.1 CEUs.

IHEA Webinar to Outline Fundamentals of Combustion
The Industrial Heating and Equipment Association (IHEA), an ANSI member, is offering all interested stakeholders a free webinar introducing combustion.

Fundamentals of Combustion will be held on Thursday, January 18 from 11am-12pm Eastern. The webinar will provide listeners with an introduction to topics including the combustion triangle, air to fuel ratio, heating values, and combustion efficiency. Participants will hear from presenter Michael Cochran, a marketing engineer specializing in combustion systems at Bloom Engineering in Pittsburgh, PA.
