The technically revised edition is relevant to organizations of all sizes, and provides principles, a framework, and a process for managing risk. ANSI is the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

ISO 31000:2018 Risk Management Revision

Released in February, ISO 31000:2018, Risk Management-Guidelines, cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 31000: 2009). It can be used to better position organizations to achieve objectives, improve the identification of opportunities and threats, and effectively allocate and use resources for risk treatment. ISO 31000 cannot be used for certification purposes.

The main changes compared to the previous edition include:

- Review of the principles of risk management, which are the key criteria for its success;

- Highlighting of the leadership by top management and the integration of risk management, starting with the governance of the organization;

- Greater emphasis on the iterative nature of risk management, noting that new experiences, knowledge, and analysis can lead to a revision of process elements, actions, and controls at each stage of the process; and

- Streamlining of the content with greater focus on sustaining an open systems model to fit multiple needs and contexts.

The document was prepared by ISO Technical Committee (TC) 262, Risk management, with ANSI member and accredited standards developer the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) serving as the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) administrator.

Those using the guideline can track and compare all the changes between the new revision and its previous edition through ISO 31000:2018 Plus Redline, which includes the new standard and its redline versionwith every change marked.
