As the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages its members and relevant stakeholders to comment on a new ISO work item proposal on transaction assurance in e-commerce.

According to the proposal, submitted by Standardization Administration of China (SAC) and the Association Francaise de Normalisation (AFNOR), while the proposed new committee will take into account existing and relative ISO standards related to e-commerce, some issues still need to be addressed, including:

  • Consistency of the transaction goods and services in cyberspace with their physical entities

  • Authenticity and integrality of transaction goods and services

The proposal also states that standards are needed to standardize the transaction process and to protect online consumer rights in e-commerce (including both prevention of online disputes and resolution process). Other needs cited include the interoperability and admissibility of commodity quality inspection in cross-border e-commerce, among other areas.

All interested U.S. parties are invited to review additional details in the proposal, which includes an initial proposed work plan as well as information on how it may related to existing international standardization work and relevant stakeholders and organizations.

Please submit comments to Steve Cornish, ANSI senior director of international policy ([email protected]), by close of business on April 27, 2018. Based on the input received from U.S. stakeholders, a recommended ANSI position and any comments will be developed and presented to the ANSI ISO Committee (AIC) for approval before the ISO voting deadline of June 1, 2018.

ANSI has published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
