Calling all University Students and Professors: ANSI Launches Standards Negotiation Competition for World Standards Week 2018

5/04/2018

Prizes will be awarded to each member of the winning team

Building on the success of previous standards negotiation competitions and as part of its effort to increase awareness about the global impact of standardization, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites undergraduate or graduate students to take part in an exciting competition that will provide insight into the process of developing an international standard. The event will take place during World Standards Week 2018, on October 15 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the FHI 360 Conference Center in Washington, DC.

Participating teams - each made up of four to five university students and a faculty mentor - will represent stakeholders with diverse perspectives and goals in considering development of an international standard.

While the development of an actual voluntary consensus standard may take months and multiple meetings, the exercise condenses the effort into an informative and fun day of strategy and negotiation. Participants will learn about standards through briefings and debriefings surrounding the negotiation, and have a first-hand opportunity to experience the development process.

Teams will receive background information in advance of the competition, but roles will be randomly assigned on the day of the event.

Access and share the event flyer on ANSI's Sharepoint.

Event & Prize Process

Judges from ANSI's standards community will assign scores based on how each team develops and pursues strategies, tactics, and interactions, as well as their success in meeting objectives in the final standard. Prizes will be awarded to each member of the winning team.

Participation in the competition is open to university teams only, and space is limited to four to six teams. Multi-disciplinary teams consisting of undergraduate or graduate students in different areas of study are highly encouraged.

To be considered for participation in the competition, university students and professors should contact ANSI's Lisa Rajchel at [email protected] as soon as possible.

ANSI's World Standards Week is the standardization community's premier annual gathering, with multiple conferences, committee meetings, and special events designed to inspire open dialogue about standardization and conformity assessment.
