The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages its relevant stakeholders to attend international workshop in India to develop an International Workshop Agreement (IWA) on the screening of GMOs in cotton and textiles on January 16-17, 2019. The registration deadline is August 2, 2018.
To meet regulations about organic products, cotton farmers and processors must show that they are not using GMOs, and that they are preventing the contact and mixing of their organic products with non-organic conventional cotton throughout the chain of custodyfrom seed to shirt.
An IWA provides a standardized protocol to screen (processed) cotton and textile samples for the potential presence of GMOs (both authorized, as well as non-authorized). Furthermore, an ISO/IWA on screening of GMOs in cotton provides greater visibility of professional practices within the field of testing cotton or textiles on GMO presence.
Two online preparatory meetings will take place on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, and Thursday, November 15, 2018.
