The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has posted an advance notice of proposed rulemaking in the U.S. Federal Register. FMCSA is seeking public comment about Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) that need to be amended, revised, or eliminated to facilitate the safe introduction of commercial vehicles equipped with automated driving systems (ADS) onto U.S. roadways.
In approaching the task of adapting its regulations to accommodate automated vehicle technologies, FMCSA is considering changes to its rules to account for significant differences between human operators and automated driving systems. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages members of the ANSI Federation, standards developing organizations (SDOs), industry representatives, consumer advocates, and other relevant stakeholders to submit comments in response to this request.
All comments must be received by July 29, 2019. This is a revised date and replaces the previously published deadline of August 26, 2019.
The full Federal Register notice, including details and on how to submit comments, are available here. See the "Public Participation and Request for Comments" portion of the SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION section for instructions, including collection of information comments for the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, OMB.
