UL Completes Research with the VA on Medical Device Cybersecurity
UL, an ANSI member and audited designator, has completed a two-year collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) examining gaps in the marketplace for cybersecurity standards specific to medical devices.
The Cooperative Research and Development Agreement Program (CRADA) researched how medical devices are susceptible to cybersecurity attacks, leading to patient safety risks and disclosure risks for protected health information. After two years of collaboration, UL and the VA released a set of key CRADA findings, including that testing and certification to UL 2900, Standard for Software Cybersecurity for Network-Connectible Products, can accelerate the adoption of innovative healthcare technologies and enhance endpoint security.
"As the VA is dedicated to the safety and security of veterans, this report is reflective of two years of close collaboration among private and public sector experts in healthcare and cybersecurity," said Marc Wine, director, Technical Integration Support and Industry Liaison, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. "The report findings will help the VA ensure safety for its patient community while also serving as a model for how we can continue to drive innovation within the larger healthcare ecosystem."

NFPA Awarded FEMA Grant to Study Impact of Active Shooter/Hostile Events
NFPA, an ANSI member an accredited standards developer, has announced that its research affiliate - the Fire Protection Research Foundation - is overseeing a two-year project on active shooter and hostile events funded by a Fire Prevention and Safety Grant from FEMA.
"Economic and Emotional Impact of an Active Shooter/Hostile Event" will examine the toll felt by individual emergency responders as well as fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and local governments after involvement with these tragedies. Expanded mental health resources, staff turnovers, early retirements, and staff reassignments are some of the financial impacts that may be experienced, and there are few resources available that inform public policy and resources allocation to offer support in the aftermath.
The project, which will include integral involvement from the technical committee for NFPA 3000, Standard for an Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response (ASHER) Program, aims to define a sustainable and quantified approach to measure the impact of these events. Proposed outcomes include establishing valid economic measures for fire services and others, quantifying short- and long-term emotional impact on emergency responders, justifying resources for preparedness, and supporting the approach outlined in NFPA 3000.

Free CAAS Webinars Provide Information on Standards and Policy Development
The Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has two free webinars available on demand for stakeholders interested in standards and policy development for ambulance service providers.
"How to Develop Policies and Procedures" is a 50-minute presentation designed for smaller agencies looking to organize their procedures into functional and accessible formats. "Top 10 Standard Challenges and How to Avoid Them," a 35-minute presentation, lists the top 10 standards commonly misunderstood or misinterpreted for this industry.
Listeners will learn about the intent and interpretation of each standard, and hear tips on how to successfully meet the standards and participate in the standards revision process.
