In the event of a homeland security threat or disaster, law enforcement personnel and other emergency responders may use personal radiation detectors that alert them to photon-emitting radioactive materials. These devices are used for detection, interdiction, and prevention, and may include alarms that indicate an increase in exposure rate. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has published a new standard to guide these detection devices. IEEE/ANSI N42.33-2019, American National Standard Portable Exposure Rate Meters for Homeland Security, describes design criteria, performance requirements, and performance tests that support these devices in protecting emergency personnel in potentially dangerous situations.
IEEE, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, is a technical professional organization for engineering, computing, and technology professionals, with 423,000 members in more than 160 countries. The organization fosters collaboration among its members in technologies including computing, sustainable energy systems, aerospace, communications, robotics, healthcare, and more.
