People on the Move

4/05/2021

People on the Move highlights the career advancements of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

APA – The Engineered Wood Association, a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has announced that Mark Tibbetts will be its new president. Mr. Tibbetts began the transition to the position on March 15, and will assume the role on July 1 following the retirement of Ed Elias.

Mr. Tibbetts has over 15 years of experience in association and nonprofit program management, environmental policy, and business development. Prior to joining APA, he held management and leadership roles at the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute, Thermostat Recycling Corporation, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, and the American Public Works Association.

“Mark Tibbetts’ passionate interest in and understanding of the role APA undertakes for its members and the industry clearly set him apart,” said Jim Enright, chair of the APA Board of Trustees. “The Board endorsed him as the new APA president because of his experience with team building, leadership, and communication, and we are excited to add his expertise to our talented team at APA.”

“With deep appreciation, the Board thanks Ed Elias for his tireless and steadfast leadership at APA during the coronavirus pandemic,” Enright said. “When it coincided with the search for his successor, Ed, without pause, postponed his planned retirement on behalf of APA staff and members. We thank him for 43 years of service to APA and wish him the best in this new chapter of his life.”

The American Bankers Association (ABA), an ANSI member, has named Paul Benda as senior vice president for operational risk and cybersecurity. In this newly expanded role, Mr. Benda will help banks reduce physical, cyber, fraud, and other risks to their daily operations, and advocate for policies that enhance overall industry resiliency. He will also expand ABA’s anti-fraud efforts and industry offerings related to risk, and advise senior leadership on reducing risks to the organization’s own operations.

Mr. Benda joined ABA in 2018, overseeing physical and cybersecurity risks. During the pandemic, he led ABA’s response to support their members, and served as the organization’s coordinator with federal agencies, trade associations, and state bankers associations to help banks manage risks associated with COVID-19. Prior to joining ABA, Mr. Benda was with the Department of Homeland Security, filling several roles including senior counselor to the undersecretary and acting deputy undersecretary in the department’s Science and Technology Directorate, and director of the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency.

“Throughout this unprecedented health crisis, Paul has worked tirelessly to provide timely, factual, and relevant information to banks across the country on how to navigate the many threats associated with the pandemic," said Rob Nichols, ABA president and CEO. “His professional and military experience have been invaluable. This expanded role will allow Paul to do even more to help the banking industry efficiently manage risks moving forward."
