The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) today issued a survey on methods or guidance materials that measure the impact of voluntary standards on human health and safety. Information provided in response to the survey will help to inform planning for a meeting on this topic. Survey responses are requested by June 7, 2021.
ANSI, in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories Inc. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is planning to host a meeting to share best practices and methodologies related to measuring the impact of voluntary standards on human health and safety. By sharing and discussing ideas on evaluating the impact of voluntary standards, the expectation is to build upon existing work and fuel future collaboration. This collaboration will contribute to a long-term goal of developing common methodologies that stakeholders can use to measure the overall health and safety impact of standards.
The meeting will most likely be virtual in the Fall 2021 timeframe and will include presentations, moderated discussion, and audience Q&A. Expected topics of discussion include: standards’ effect on safety incident frequency, incident severity, resulting deaths, resulting injuries, and associated property damage; what data is available or needed; what approaches to take or proxies to use when incident data is not available or unclear; and what statistical methods have been or could be applied to this problem.
