Register Today for WSW Special Event: Measuring the Impact of Voluntary Consensus Standards on Human Health and Safety

9/27/2021

In a featured event of World Standards Week 2021, ANSI – in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) – will bring the standardization community together for a virtual session, Measuring the Impact of Voluntary Standards on Human Health and Safety, on October 28, 2021. The workshop will launch an important exploration of methods to quantify the health and safety impacts of voluntary consensus standards.

Representatives from standards developing organizations, federal government agencies, consumers, and manufacturers will share their perspectives during discussions on ‘how’ and ‘why’ the health and safety aspects of standards are important. Open to all, the event is a platform for active information sharing and participation from all attendees.

Keynote speaker Laurie E. Locascio, Ph.D., vice president for research, University of Maryland, will share her expertise on the vital importance of standardization. Dr. Locascio previously spent three decades at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), most recently as Acting Principal Deputy Director and Associate Director responsible for leading the internal scientific research and laboratory programs across two campuses in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Boulder, Colorado. In July 2021, President Biden nominated Dr. Locascio to serve as the next director of NIST.

Following the keynote address, two sessions will feature expert presentations and a panel discussion with Q&A supporting a long-term goal of building upon existing work and fueling future collaboration to develop common measurement methodologies. Expert presenters and moderators will represent the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), CSA Group, Compliance Program Services LLC, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., and more.

The sessions will include:

Session 1: Presentations

Session one will set the stage for the day’s discussions with presentations on the use of data, the economic and business cases for measuring standards’ impact on health and safety, and case studies on quality management systems and leading and lagging indicators.

Session 2: Panel Discussion

Session two will further develop the themes raised during the morning with a moderated panel discussion featuring representatives of government, standards developing organizations, the workplace, consumers, and manufacturers.
