People on the Move

3/03/2022

People on the Move highlights the career advancements of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) has announced that Aaron Hilger is its new CEO. He is replacing Vincent Sandusky, who announced his retirement after serving as CEO since 2008.

Hilger has more than 20 years of leadership experience, serving as executive director of SMACNA Rochester and SMACNA New York State for more than a decade. He was president and CEO of Builders Exchange of Rochester from 2003-2021, leading initiatives to bring diversity to the trade association through mentorship and professional development. His work positioned the organization as a policy expert on New York State construction issues. He has also served as a trustee for several apprenticeship councils, pension funds, and welfare funds.

“Aaron’s wealth of expertise and passion for the industry stands to make our association better,” said Al LaBella, president of SMACNA. “Knowing the positive impact he’s had at SMACNA New York State and SMACNA Rochester, I’m thrilled to work with him on a national platform.”

SMPTE has appointed Florian Schleich as its new standards vice president. In this role, he will direct and supervise the organization’s standards projects.

Schleich has many years of experience with SMPTE standards, first studying the file format specification for the Material Exchange Format (MXF) in 2005 while an undergraduate student at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen, Germany. His involvement with SMPTE continued over the years as he led a drafting group for digital cinema standards and the technology committee developing and maintaining all IMF standards. He is part of the user community as well, most recently working for Netflix managing technology partnerships and standards.

“Florian is an enthusiastic and deep thinker whose talent with modern workflows is exactly what SMPTE needs,” said outgoing SMPTE standards vice president Bruce Devlin. “He has the skill and insight with both people and technology to bring great projects into the SMPTE community. The Society is lucky to have found the right standards leader at the right time, and I look forward to seeing Florian and the larger standards team achieve great things.”
