People on the Move

9/30/2022

People on the Move highlights the career advancements of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has named Dana Kamal as its new director, international business development (MENA – Middle East North Africa). In this role, Kamal will oversee regional planning, direction, coordination, and support of the association’s international development functions in the Middle East and North Africa. She will also work to make training more accessible for local leaders in the region, and assist with the translation of NFPA codes for local use.

Kamal is an engineer with more than 20 years of experience in healthcare business development and operations. Prior to joining NPFA, she was senior manager of facilities systems and program support at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, where she spent over a decade strategizing and managing utility systems, and life safety and clinical education programs. Kamal has also worked for The Dubai Mall Medical Center and other community-based clinics under Emaar Healthcare Community Service. She has worked with Dubai Health Care City to connect patients’ identification and records under one network, and to assist in the launch of the Boston University Dental Health Center Dubai. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, a master’s degree in healthcare management, and numerous certifications in the areas of emergency management and fire safety, hospital planning, and design.

“NFPA has a long-standing presence in the Middle East, working closely with government officials and private entities conducting business in the Gulf region,” said Jim Pauley, NFPA president and CEO. “The region has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years; therefore, it is critical for authorities, the workforce, and the public to ensure safety practices keep pace with progress. The experience and knowledge Dana Kamal brings to this role is vital to the work we do to provide relevant resources in Arabic for those charged with protecting people and property.”

The American Bankers Association has appointed Brooke Ybarra as its senior vice president of innovation and strategy. Ybarra will lead the group’s Office of Innovation, identifying emerging technologies that benefit the banking industry, and supporting policies that promote responsible innovation in banking.

Previously, Ybarra was ABA’s vice president of innovation strategy. She assumed this role in September 2021. Prior to that, Ybarra was a senior director in global quality at Marriott International. She has also served as a consultant with Accenture focusing on electronic payment issues, and worked at the CIA as a program manager and analyst. Ybarra holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering as well as an MBA.

“Since arriving at ABA, Brooke has impressed all of us with her understanding of the banking innovation marketplace and the challenges banks face in staying on the cutting edge,” said ABA president and CEO Rob Nichols. “Under her leadership, ABA’s Office of Innovation will continue its important work of not only identifying the technologies that will shape the future of banking, but also the policies needed to allow banks to efficiently utilize those technologies and spur additional innovation.”
