Dust and Dust Storms: ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposed New ISO Technical Committee

11/09/2022

Submit Feedback by December 16

As the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) seeks comments by December 16, 2022, on a proposal for a new ISO technical committee (TC) on dust and dust storms.

Iran National Standards Organization (INSO) submitted the proposal with the following scope statement:

“Standardization in the field of natural dust and dust storm on an urban scale and in industrial towns, excluded artificial/manufactures dust. Standardization and development of international standards includes: terminology, specifications, constituent and size of dust, feature of dust storms and prevent the creation of dust or reduce the risks of natural dust in the areas of healthcare, safe water, agriculture, transportation, etc.”

Worldwide health and sustainable development have been threatened by the global climate change to a large extent. Dust, one of the results of climate change, has created many destructive effects in the fields of good health and well-being, climate action, sustainable cities and communities, life on land, and economic growth, and clean water and sanitation, the proposal asserts.

According to the proposal, standardization in the field of dust and dust storms can be addressed and examined in three levels, including:

  • definition and terminology;
  • investigation of the causes and prevention of dust and dust storms; and
  • the effects of dust and dust storms and ways to reduce them.

Review the proposal and submit comments to Steven Cornish, ANSI senior director of international policy and strategy, [email protected], by close of business on December 16 2022. Based on input received from U.S. stakeholders, a recommended ANSI position and any comments will be developed and presented at the ANSI ISO Committee (AIC) for approval before ISO’s voting deadline of January 31, 2023.
