The Steel Deck Institute (SDI) recently announced the appointment of J. Kenneth Charles, III as managing director. Charles has served as the managing director of the Steel Joist Institute (SJI) for the past 12 years, and he will add management of the SDI to his responsibilities at the SJI. He will continue to advance the Institute’s involvement in research and look to find ways to support designers and users of steel deck. He succeeds SDI’s former managing director, Bob Paul, who has been involved in the SDI as a director, committee chair, and officer since 1991.
Prior to joining the SJI, Charles was with Southeastern Consulting, where he served as a principal. Notably, he was president of Socar, Inc, for nearly three decades. Charles has also held positions for Commercial Metals Company and New Millennium Building Systems. He sits on the NASCC Planning Committee of the American Institute of Steel Construction and the board of directors for the House of Hope of the Pee Dee.
The Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI) has named Chadwick Collins of TK Sebastian LLC as its technical director. Collins will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the SPRI’s technical agenda, including identifying, communicating, and assisting in developing action plans in response to activities being undertaken by regulatory and governmental agencies, and other groups that may impact SPRI and its members in the roofing industry.
Collins has nearly 20 years of roofing and advocacy experience. For the past five years, he was director of codes and regulatory compliance for Kellen Company, an association and trade organization management firm headquartered in Atlanta. During his career, he has held many technical positions, as technical services representative and specifier services engineer at Johns Manville, and as senior codes engineer and senior innovation and industrial advocacy engineer at Firestone Building Products Company.
