Movers and Shakers highlights the career advancements and accomplishments of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.
The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has named Steven Thygerson, Ph.D., its 2025 Safety Professional of the Year. The award is presented to an ASSP member who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the occupational safety and health (OSH) field while also advancing the OSH profession overall.
Thygerson is an environmental and occupational health professor at Brigham Young University. Among his career achievements, Thygerson has worked to improve health standards for brick makers, a sector known for hazardous working conditions. He has conducted groundbreaking research around the globe, particularly in developing countries, and has collaborated with institutions in Nepal, Thailand, Peru, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Mozambique.
Additionally, Thygerson has written and collaborated on more than 50 books, articles, and publications. He has presented at nearly 75 national and international conferences. He advocates for safety and health through many volunteer positions, including with the Utah Passenger Ropeway Safety Board, Utah County Trauma Executive Team, Workplace Health Without Borders, and the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health.
“Dr. Thygerson is a master educator who leverages a decade of industry experience to enrich his teaching,” said Joshua West, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Public Health at Brigham Young. “He consistently receives exceptional student evaluations, with feedback emphasizing his alignment with our mission of character building, intellectual growth, and lifelong learning.”
SAE International recently announced that Andy Jeffers is the 2025 recipient of its SAE’s Medal of Honor. The award, created in 1986, recognizes an individual who has demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the organization’s mission of advancing mobility solutions for the benefit of humanity.
Jeffers’s career at General Motors (GM) spans more than 30 years, where he recently served as engineering group manager, for engine, transmission, and electrification development, and as the SAE International relationship manager.
As a long-standing SAE International member, he has served in countless roles, including Detroit Section chair and member of the Off-Highway and Powerplant Committee, and was elected to the SAE Board of Directors twice, among many other roles. Throughout his leadership positions inside and outside of GM, he has had a significant impact on the mobility industry.
A supporter of STEM education, Jeffers also initiated a Junior Solar Sprint program for middle schoolers through a joint venture between SAE, Argonne National Labs, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and was instrumental in developing SAE’s award-winning A World In Motion® STEM education program.
