Walter Zoller, senior manager of technology standards and regulations at Rockwell Automation, has been selected by the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day (WSD) Planning Committee as the recipient of the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award. A respected figure in international electrotechnical standardization known for building consensus during complex technical discussions, Zoller will be honored during the U.S. Celebration of WSD on December 8, 2026, in Washington, DC.
Named for the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce, the Ronald H. Brown Award honors demonstrated leadership in promoting the important role of standardization in eliminating global barriers to trade.
Zoller’s career in standards began early, shaped by experienced mentors who helped build the deep technical expertise for which he is known today. He currently serves as secretary to IEC Technical Committee (TC) 65, Industrial-process measurement, control, and automation, Subcommittee (SC) 65B, Measurement and control devices, and to the IEC Systems Committee for Smart Manufacturing (SyC SM). In these roles, he plays a critical part in developing and maintaining key standards that shape industry practices while enhancing the credibility and influence of U.S. participation on the international stage.
Zoller is also an active contributor to the U.S. National Committee (USNC) to the International Electrotechnical Commission, where he serves on the Technical Management Committee and participates in the USNC Young Professionals mentor program and communications committee—helping to cultivate the next generation of standards leaders.
A previous recipient of ANSI’s Next Generation and Meritorious Service awards, Zoller has been widely recognized for his significant contributions to the U.S. voluntary standardization system.
About World Standards Day
Celebrated annually, World Standards Day pays tribute to the thousands of volunteers around the world who participate in standardization activities and helps to raise awareness of the role that standards play in addressing national and global priorities. The event has been held since 1970 and is recognized in nations around the globe.
The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day is an annual event that honors the U.S. standards and conformity assessment community and recognizes its efforts to promote American competitiveness in a global marketplace, safeguard the environment, and improve the quality of life for workers and consumers around the world. U.S. activities are organized annually by a planning committee consisting of representatives from across the standards and conformity assessment community—and co-chaired by ANSI and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NEMA is serving as the administrating organization in 2026.
WSD 2026 Theme: An Electrifying Future Powered by Standards
The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day highlights the critical role that voluntary consensus standards play in advancing innovation, safety, and economic growth across all sectors of the economy. As society moves toward a more electrified, connected, and technologically complex future, standards developed by a diverse community of standards developers provide the shared foundation that enables interoperability, reliability, and trust. Across industries and disciplines, these standards help support long-term resilience, protect public health and safety, and fortify cybersecurity and data privacy—turning ideas into scalable, real‑world solutions that deliver broad public benefit.
“An Electrifying Future Powered by Standards” is a forward‑looking and inclusive theme that recognizes the collective contributions of standards developers, industry, government, and other stakeholders. It emphasizes standards as essential enablers of progress—supporting emerging technologies, strengthening infrastructure, and ensuring that innovation is reliable, secure, and resilient.
Zoller’s work in industrial-process automation and smart manufacturing standards reflects this vision—helping to assure that as industries electrify and digitize, the standards underpinning these systems are robust, interoperable, and shaped by U.S. expertise.
