The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has renamed its AI Safety Institute Consortium as the NIST AI Consortium and broadened the group’s focus, including opportunities for new organizations to join.
The renamed consortium will concentrate on AI measurement, innovation, and adoption. Its work will include building an ecosystem for evaluating AI systems, supporting the use of AI in scientific research, and promoting U.S.-developed AI technology.
The consortium’s activities will be carried out by six task groups:
How to get involved
NIST Deputy Director Craig Burkhardt invites technically capable organizations to take part, noting that NIST wants to expand its AI measurement work by drawing on the broader community’s expertise. NIST is accepting letters of interest from any organization with relevant technical capabilities.
Participants are selected on a first-come, first-served basis from those that submit complete letters. Existing members do not need to reapply, but they must sign an amendment agreeing to the consortium’s changes. Member organizations enter into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with NIST.
Details on how to submit a letter of interest are available through NIST and the Federal Register notice.
