The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC), an industry program of SAE International’s SAE Industry Technologies Consortia, has released guidance on the appropriate use of terminology related to automated driving system–dedicated vehicle (ADS-DV) stops.
The report, “AVSC Information Report on Automated Driving System–Dedicated Vehicle (ADS-DV) Stopped Conditions,” provides a comprehensive taxonomy for vehicle stops, distinguishing between nominal stops (routine, planned events) and off-nominal stops (unexpected scenarios or system degradation). It also addresses triggers, stakeholder impacts, and strategies for managing these conditions safely.
“As automated driving technology evolves, clear communication and shared understanding are essential to earning public confidence,” said Darcyne Foldenauer, executive director of AVSC. “This report helps the industry speak the same language about stopped conditions, especially those triggered by unexpected events, so we can manage them safely and consistently.”
