The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) and the Power Tool Institute have joined Call2Recycle—the nation’s largest consumer battery stewardship and collection program—and participating manufacturers to support a new battery collection program that enables the safe collection and responsible recycling of high energy batteries that power outdoor tools and equipment.
OPEI reports that under the new program, eligible and enrolled retailers will have access to safety training and recycling materials. Furthermore, consumers will be able to return end-of-life high-energy batteries to participating collection sites, where they will be assessed, shipped, and processed for proper recycling.
“OPEI members are dedicated to product safety and environmental stewardship. We work hand in hand with regulators to ensure the safe delivery of outdoor power equipment, batteries, and other products,” said Kris Kiser, president, OPEI. “With this initiative, the outdoor power equipment industry reaffirms its environmental and safety commitment by offering retailers and end users in four states with a convenient and compliant solution for their end-of-life high energy batteries.”
