Standards in the Spotlight: Pool Heaters & Robotic Lawnmowers

8/18/2020

To communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) highlights recent examples of the diverse standards development activities in the global and national standards arenas, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers.

Pool Heaters

Summertime is a popular time to jump into a pool, cool off, and relax. Luckily, there is a standard to help assure that a pool is the perfect temperature. It can also help extend the ambiance of the season for those who take a swim during the colder fall months. An American National Standard (ANS) on testing and rating pool heaters has been recently updated by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer.

ANSI/ASHRAE 146-2020, Methods Of Testing And Rating Pool Heaters, provides methods of testing for rating pool heaters and testing for heating capacity and energy efficiency. This standard applies to forced circulation heaters operated by gas, oil, and/or electricity, and includes heat pumps that use ambient air, earth, water, or a brine solution as a heat source as well as hybrid heaters.

Robotic Battery Powered Electrical Lawnmowers

Summertime is also a key season to properly maintain your yard, which includes mowing the lawn. A new standard helps making lawn-mowing less of a chore. An ANS on requirements for robotic battery powered electrical lawnmowers has been developed by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer.

ANSI/OPEI 60335-2-107-2020, Household And Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-107: Particular Requirements For Robotic Battery Powered Electrical Lawnmowers, specifies safety requirements and their verification for the design and construction of robotic battery powered electrical rotary lawnmowers. This standard also provides requirements for the safety of mains powered charging stations and signal sources for perimeter delimiters.
