United States Standards Strategy Committee

The United States Standards Strategy Committee (USSSC) was established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to undertake the process of reviewing and revising the National Standard Strategy for the United States (NSS).

United States Standards Strategy Committee Overview

In March of 2004, Dr. George W. Arnold, chairman of the ANSI Board of Directors, led the formation of the United States Standards Strategy Committee. The objective of the USSSC was to update the National Standards Strategy for the United States (NSS) in a way that will benefit the nation and the international community along with meeting diverse interests of organizations. The USSSC conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the NSS, including the principles, objectives and tactics it contains. The review determined new situations which dictated strategic revisions and offer new opportunities.

The final version of the United States Standards Strategy was approved by ANSI’s Board of Directors on December 8, 2005 and was updated and re-approved on December 2, 2010.

Conduct of Work

The USSSC was dedicated to following an open, balanced and participatory process throughout the entire revision process.

The work of the USSSC was publicized on a regular basis in an effort to solicit and encourage input from the broader U.S. standardization community and provide the opportunity for comments throughout the process. The USSSC gave all comments and input received full, fair and deliberate consideration.

ANSI’s policy committees and membership forums were encouraged to assist in encouraging and coordinating input from various constituencies.

ANSI members and non-members were invited to become involved directly in the NSS revision process through participation in one or more of the USSSC subgroups.

Members and Officers

Twenty-two representatives of the standards and conformity assessment community constitute the USSSC. The group’s membership was selected to ensure a broad representation of diverse interests, industry sectors, small/medium and large organizations, federal and state government, and more.
