The International Trade Administration (ITA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) is requesting public comments to gain insights on the current global artificial intelligence (AI) market. Responses will provide clarity about stakeholder concerns regarding international AI policies, regulations, and other measures which may impact U.S. exports of AI technologies. Additionally, the request for information (RFI) includes inquiries related to AI standards development. ANSI encourages relevant stakeholders to respond by ITA’s deadline of October 17, 2022.
Stakeholder feedback will provide the DOC with a stronger understanding of the AI landscape, as AI impacts existing economic sectors and industries, creates new areas for innovations, and makes its way into global trade discussions, as noted in the RFI. Responses will be used to inform ITA efforts to promote “an international environment that supports U.S. AI research and innovation, opens markets for U.S. AI technologies, and enhance the U.S. technological advantage in AI.”
The RFI is the DOC’s latest effort to drive U.S. innovation and global competitiveness in critical and emerging technologies, including AI. In May 2022, the DOC announced the launch of its National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC), which serves to provide the federal government insights into AI-related issues and complement the Department’s work with international partners – including the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC).
Access the RFI via the August 16 Federal Register, which requests more information about standards development activities related to AI.
