Movers and Shakers

10/10/2025

Movers and Shakers highlights the career advancements and accomplishments of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

William M. “Billy” Smith, executive director and CEO of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE), was recently named the 2025 Joseph Kneidinger Sustainability Professional of the Year by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO).

The award was named after Joseph Kneidinger, who made a significant impact through his continuing education and expertise in sustainable practices, and honors professionals who best fulfill or symbolize commitment to environmental sustainability. Smith received the award during the opening session of IAPMO’s Annual Education and Business Conference in Palm Springs, California.

“I’m overwhelmed that IAPMO’s Board of Directors chose to honor me with the 2025 Joseph Kneidinger Sustainability Professional of the Year award,” Smith said. “Continuing a concerted effort toward sustainability is a focal point of our industry, so we can help ensure that future generations are provided with the critical resources needed to live a quality life.”

Har Kupers, CEO, Sansei Technologies Inc. and chairman of Vekoma Rides and S&S, was awarded ASTM International’s William T. Cavanaugh Award, for his contributions to the standards community.

Kupers is a technical contributor and advocate for standards internationally, serving as a liaison between organizations. One of his key technical achievements was the harmonization of acceleration testing requirements and limits between EN 13814, ASTM F2291, and ISO, which he helps maintain to this day.

The award was named in honor of W.T. Cavanaugh, CEO of ASTM International from 1970 to 1985. Kupers will receive the award during the upcoming F24 meeting in October.
