What is the U.S. Standards Strategy?

Updated every five years, the U.S. Standards Strategy is a foundational document that guides how the U.S. develops standards and participates in the international standards system. As rapid technological change reshapes international markets, this strategy positions standards as essential tools for driving U.S. economic growth, strengthening national security, supporting public health and safety, and maintaining technological excellence.

A copy of the latest draft of the USSS 2025 will be available prior to October 21.

About the USSS Event

Attendees are invited to offer input on key steps the standards community can take to operationalize the strategy in 2026 and beyond, leveraging new, creative approaches to address priority needs.

Following a networking lunch, attendees will hear from Chris Dubay, chair of the ANSI Board of Directors, and Dr. Laurie E. Locascio, ANSI president and CEO.

A guided discussion led by moderators Dr. Locascio and Mary Saunders, ANSI senior vice president of government relations and public policy, will address four priority areas:

Priority 1: Strengthen Our Commitment to International Standards

  • How can we better coordinate among U.S. standards organizations to tackle cross-cutting technology challenges?
  • What does “leading by example” look like in practice when we see standards manipulation by other countries?
  • How do we balance recognizing consortia and open-source contributions while maintaining traditional consensus processes?

Priority 2: Demonstrate the Broad Value of Standards

  • Where have you seen successful examples of communicating standards value to non-technical audiences?
  • How can we help businesses better understand how standards support their competitiveness?
  • What specific metrics or stories resonate most when explaining standards impact?

Priority 3: Make Standards Development More Efficient

  • What does “flexible, iterative, and adaptive” standards development look like in practice?
  • How can we provide effective mentoring and education for new standards participants without overwhelming them?
  • Which digital tools have you seen successfully accelerate consensus-building while maintaining quality?

Priority 4: Address Both Opportunities and Challenges Head-On

  • How do we continue to maintain leadership in established technologies while moving rapidly to standardize emerging ones?
  • What would effective dialogue between the standards community and policymakers look like?
  • How can we ensure adequate funding for standards participation without compromising the private-sector-led model?
