Movers and Shakers

10/02/2026

Movers and Shakers highlights the career advancements and accomplishments of leaders in diverse areas of standardization, contributing to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance system.

AdvaMed has appointed Juan Carlos “JC” Scott as its chief strategy officer and executive director of AdvaMed Accel, a newly created leadership position. In this role, he will accelerate AdvaMed’s engagement with emerging medical technology companies; expand its support for entrepreneurs and scaling companies; build relationships with investors, strategic partners, and stakeholders across the broader health care landscape; and advance initiatives that increase member value.

Scott’s professional background spans health care policy, advocacy, and association leadership. He previously held senior leadership roles at AdvaMed, including chief advocacy officer. For the last seven years, he served as chief executive officer of the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA).

“JC is an accomplished association leader and a respected voice across health care,” said Scott Whitaker, president and CEO of AdvaMed. “His experience, relationships, and understanding of the innovation ecosystem will help us elevate AdvaMed Accel as the home for emerging medtech companies and investors, and further position AdvaMed as the leading advocate for medical technology innovation.”

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRCMA) has named Melissa Verwest senior director of sustainability programs.

Verwest will lead the administration, growth, and market expansion of NRMCA’s sustainability services portfolio, including Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) certifications, and related future offerings.

Verwest has more than 20 years of experience as structural design engineer and a deep knowledge of industry sustainability codes, policies, and innovations. She most recently served as corporate sustainable materials program lead at Knife River Corp. Before that, she provided technical support for precast solutions at Oldcastle Materials, and worked as a project manager at Coffman Engineers. She has also chaired the Sustainability Subcommittee of the NRMCA Promotions Committee.

For more than 15 years, Verwest has also been an adjunct professor at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, teaching a senior design capstone course coordinated by the Center for Engineering Design and Entrepreneurship (CEDE) and a study-abroad sustainability course in Delft, Netherlands.

“We are very fortunate to have Melissa joining our team,” said NRMCA president and CEO Jim Riley. “Our sustainability services, especially EPDs and certifications, are important to our members and I am confident that Melissa’s experience and background will serve the industry well.”
