Movers and Shakers highlights the career advancements and accomplishments of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) recently announced the appointment of Patrick Walsh as its senior director of procurement policy.

Walsh is an expert in procurement and government acquisition policy, having most recently served with the United States Marshals Service at the Department of Justice. Prior to that position, he served as a chief of contracting officer within the Department of Homeland Security, where he spearheaded a streamlined contracting vehicle, earning him the DHS Innovation in Contracting Award.

Having led the largest U.S. government aircraft engine purchase in history, Walsh spent several years as a contracting officer and contracts specialist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. A published author on procurement, Walsh is a frequent speaker on contracting topics. He has held unlimited contracting warrants from the U.S. Navy, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Justice. He holds a bachelor’s degree and JD from The Ohio State University.

“The way in which our industry conducts business with the U.S. government—particularly with the Pentagon—is rapidly evolving and demand is growing, so it’s imperative that AIA has experts to assist our members in understanding the changing environment. AIA is proud to welcome Patrick Walsh to our team to leverage his expertise in procurement and defense systems to meet this moment,” said Eric Fanning, AIA president and chief executive officer“With over a decade working in and around the defense and national security sector, I have no doubt that Patrick will be an asset to our member companies and the entire AIA organization.”

ASTM International recently named R. Bryan Ormond its 2025 Professor of the Year. Ormond, an associate professor and director of the Milliken Textile Protection and Comfort Center at North Carolina State University, is recognized for his efforts in using standards to teach new generations of students and PPE researchers.

Since he was a graduate student, Ormond has been active in ASTM’s personal protective clothing committee (F23). Beyond incorporating standards into his curriculum, he regularly brings students to committee meetings, with several subsequently joining the Emerging Professionals program.

He also uses standard test methods in his courses on textile engineering and science at the NC State University College of Textiles. “Through this work, he instills in students the importance of high-quality standards development and unbiased research in the textiles and PPE industry,” ASTM reported.

“On behalf of committee F23, we couldn’t be prouder to learn that Dr. Bryan Ormond has been named the 2025 ASTM International Professor of the Year,” said Brian Shiels, vice chair of the ASTM International Board of Directors. “Knowing just how integral ASTM standards were throughout Dr. Ormond’s own studies, it is great to see him come full circle by teaching their importance to the next generation of professionals and researchers in the field of Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment. With his impressive credentials as director of the world’s leading academic research center on protective clothing, I can’t think of a better recipient of this honor.”
