2025 Korea-U.S. Standards Forum in Seoul Addresses Bilateral Cooperation in Critical and Emerging Technologies

12/18/2025

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) co-hosted the hybrid 2025 Korea-U.S Standards Forum on December 4 in Seoul, Korea. The event followed the International AI Standards Summit organized by ISO, IEC, and ITU on December 2-3 at the same venue.

Now in its fifth year, this annual forum brings together leaders and subject-matter experts from industry, government, and academia in both countries. The forum serves as a valuable platform to strengthen mutual understanding, exchange expertise and best practices, and advance cooperation in standardization of critical and emerging technologies (CET)—including AI, quantum computing, semiconductors, future mobility, and biotechnology.

Event Highlights

More than 60 representatives from the U.S. and Korean public and private sectors convened to discuss standards across a range of industries, identifying challenges and opportunities for collaboration through technical presentations and breakout sessions.

The forum opened with remarks from Dr. Laurie E. Locascio, ANSI president and CEO; Daeja Kim, KATS president and administrator; and Dongmin Moon, chairman and CEO of the Korea Standards Association (KSA).

U.S. keynote speaker Jason Matusow, general manager of corporate standards at Microsoft, addressed the importance of standardization and harmonization in high-tech industry and CET sectors, offering an industry perspective on the forthcoming U.S. Standards Strategy 2025. Korean keynote speaker Youjun Choi, principal researcher of the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH) highlighted real world examples of how U.S.-Korea cooperation can advance international standards development in CET sectors such as automated, connected, and electrified transportation.

U.S. experts from UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE), Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C), the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS), HP, Inc., the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), and ASTM International joined these technical discussions.

ANSI members can find a more detailed agenda and bios of the speakers on the event website, along with photos in the gallery and a highlights video.
