Movers and Shakers

12/05/2025

Movers and Shakers highlights the career advancements and accomplishments of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

The Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) has named Alejandro Moreno as its director of international programs.

Moreno joins ESIG with nearly 20 years of experience leading national-level energy and grid strategies, programs, and partnerships. Previously, Moreno held leadership roles in the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy division, most recently as the acting assistant secretary and the associate principal deputy assistant secretary. He also spent five years at The World Bank Group, where he supported the development of energy policies and regulations to encourage investment in clean energy and energy efficiency.

“We’re exploring opportunities to bring ESIG’s proven approach of collaboration and convening to regions outside of the US,” said Debra Lew, executive director of ESIG. “Under Alejandro’s leadership, we aim to enable innovation and connection within the electricity sector around the world.”

“At a time when the sector is changing across the globe and the demands placed on it have never been higher, growing ESIG’s reach internationally will provide critical support to ensure electricity and energy systems around the world expand and adapt in the most technically sound ways. I’m thrilled to join the staff and lead this important work,” said Moreno.

Moreno holds a master’s degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University, and a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University.

The Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) recently appointed Dr. Jaap Venema as chief scientist and executive vice president, science.

Venema has more than 35 years of experience across academia, the pharmaceutical sector, and nonprofit leadership. Most recently, he was the chief science officer at the U.S. Pharmacopeia, where he led scientific strategy and quality standards development for medicines, biologics, dietary supplements, food ingredients, and health care practices.

“Jaap brings deep expertise and strategic vision that will further PCPC’s leadership in scientific rigor and evidence-based advocacy,” said Tom Myers, president and CEO of PCPC. “He has a keen ability to navigate complex scientific landscapes while staying focused on public health and industry impact. His collaborative style and global perspective make him an ideal partner for our member companies and the international cosmetics and personal care products community.”

Venema holds a doctorate in molecular biology from the University of Leiden, Netherlands.
